Atheism Is Dead

There are no true atheists. Everyone worships something.

To worship is to ascribe providence—one's happiness, hopes, survival, liberty, etc.—to someone or something.

Because of the Light of Christ, every soul worships. It seems to be hardwired into our nature. (John 1: 9; Doc. & Cov. 84: 45-47)

Some worship the Earth, as evidenced by devotion to environmental conservation, even if they claim to follow no other God. Some worship the Creature, rather than the Creator.

It is truly awesome to contemplate the wonders of Creation. But some "miss the forest for the trees." In fact, they never see the Forester himself, calmly yet diligently tending.

Many worship the workmanship of their own hands. In many ages this has meant statues, icons, images, groves, etc.

Though it’s easy to cast mental derision upon such an apparently reprehensible religionism, and consign it to past ages of unenlightened ignorance, idolatry is still quite popular, especially among those who spurn at anything "religious."

Money, jobs, careers, businesses, social circles, acceptance, positions, power, prestige, popularity, influence, investments, automobiles, houses, lands, entertainments, amusements, athletics, philosophies, academic attainments, parties, platforms, politicians, leaders, celebrities, traditions, foods, drinks, leisure activities, recreations, books, electronic devices, and on and on.

These, together with every other good thing can become our God if we worship it—if we ascribe to it our sense of joyful existence.

Everyone worships something; everyone has found [a] God.

Ironically, those who still seek God are on a course to find the true One. Those who are smugly satisfied in their search, sadly, are stunted spiritually.

"Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; [then] all these things shall be added unto you [and will not become your God]."

Matthew 6: 33; see also Isaiah 55: 6-13

Some have taken themself as their God.

These suppose they are smarter than any conception of God they’ve been shown, and are therefore, their own God.

Some think that unless they can see God, He cannot exist. This implies omniscience, and again claims that the person themself is God.

Claiming not to have seen God as proof of His nonexistence implies that they have seen the whole universe in one great instantaneous sweep, and God was not to be found anywhere within their view. Their pretended ability to see every corner at the same time, of course, shows they assume themself to be omniscient.

The existence of God is a matter of fact, proven by scientific means.

People have observed Him in actual experience, and have recorded their encounters. Can there be any purer science?

Many have performed the experiment to know if the Book of Mormon is true, by asking the Father in the name of the Son, in faith.

Positive affirmation in response simultaneously establishes the truthfulness of the Book, and the living reality of the Giver of the answer—an all-loving, all-powerful, tender Parent.

"And now, I would commend you to seek this Jesus of whom the prophets and apostles have written, that the grace of God the Father, and also the Lord Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost, which beareth record of them, may be and abide in you forever."

Ether 12: 41

Don't let your possessions get possession over you.

Don't settle for less than the Greatest.

The True and Living God.

He is your Father.

He has a plan for you that is impossible to fully imagine.

"Prepare. Believe. Be ready. Have faith. ... Be ready when your time comes, for surely it will come."

Howard W. Hunter
